New Millennium Marketing

by Rick Thomas on 2010/06/21

The days when a business could expect consumers to respond to obnoxious, repetitive blasting of their sales pitch on television or the radio seem to be fading fast.  With the advent of web 2.0 and social media people are researching and actively seeking out others opinions on a product or service before they spend their hard earned cash.  This has “raised the bar” with regard to  what potential clients expect in terms of customer service and product quality.  There are no secrets anymore …  and often times if a consumer is unable to make an informed decision, he/she will hold out on spending their money until they get the info they want!

For many business owners this is uncharted territory, and for a few it is downright frightening.  Businesses large and small have enjoyed decades of one way marketing where they could tell the public what they wanted them to know, their clients would purchase the product or service, and the extent to which they liked, disliked, or found it useful could only be spread publicly by word of mouth.  Now, these same companies have to face the reality that if a client is not satisfied, and posts his displeasure on the web, that information will be available to anyone who researches his product or service. THE GOOD NEWS IS … the same holds true for a product or service that exceeds expectations as well!

So how does a business take advantage of these new trends in marketing?

  • Start (and manage)  a Company Facebook page.
  • Get a Twitter account and encourage your clients and potential clients to “follow” you.
  • Start a company blog, share news about your company and industry with interested parties.
  • Use SEO (search engine optimization) to get your Facebook page, Twitter account, and blog to support your company webpage EFFECTIVELY!
