Search engine optimization (SEO)/ Social media consultants have for some time now been advocating the notion that to be effective in promoting a business through social media the communication must be WITH our target audience and not AT them! We teach that a strategy that will work is one that offers something of value, that establishes you or your business as a knowledgeable leader in your geographic area, helps build a genuine relationship with your potential clients, and creates trust between the 2 of you. Most social media people recite this doctrine on a daily basis …
THEN SIT DOWN TO THEIR COMPUTER AND BLAST THEIR WEBSITE AND COMPANY BLOG ALL OVER THE INTERNET!
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not preaching … in fact … I’m as guilty as anyone else! Given the fact that promoting a website/blog/business online is a multifaceted, time consuming process … it is natural to want to see some kind of progress as we rise in the search rankings and start to make a name for ourselves. Every business person wants to hear the phone ringing off the hook, to start making some sales, and see the cash piling up in the register. So we write a blog pushing our own self interests, social bookmark it, tweet it, share it … and what happens? People read it and it’s just another advertisement to them … blah blah blah! This is the same approach to marketing and advertising that has left consumers fed up with television and print media. Consumers expect more, and research more, and make educated decisions on what they are going to buy, and who they are going to buy it from! The business that is going to thrive in the new era of social media needs to provide useful information with no “hard sell” attached.
How refreshing it is when, from time to time, I stumble upon a business owner doing social media the right way! Karen Highland, a Realtor from Frederick Md. writes a supporting blog for her company “The Highland Group – Real Estate Teams” called 365 Frederick, it is an excellent example of how to use a blog to provide her clients with the info they might want if they are considering a move to the Frederick area … she writes about …
Local Charities
Museums
Schools
Parks
Special Events
Stores
The main theme of her blog is NOT that she is a Realtor, but rather, here is everything and anything you might want to know about Frederick Maryland. If you look hard enough and in the right places you will see that yes … she is a Realtor, but it is not the main point of the blog, it’s more just a side note. If you want to know something about Frederick she is the “go to girl”! When people ask questions about non Real Estate issues she isn’t “always closing” … she is providing a service AND building a relationship! She is there at the start to help them choose the city … why would they use someone else when selecting a specific home… Karen has already established herself as a trusted and knowledgeable friend!
Kudos to Karen! This is Social Media Marketing at its BEST!
